Contemporary history of Basque translation, the sociology of translation, field theoryAbstract
Over the last four decades Basque translation has undergone a process of institutionaliza-tion and this work looks at how this process has transformed literary translation. On the basis of the sociologist P. Bourdieu’s field theory, translated Basque literature is defined here as a subfield; subsequently, of three levels of analysis for examining fields (the conditions for production and circulation; artists’ attitudes; the field’s range and acceptance), the first is looked at in detail: the organizations and agents that structure the field (associations, studies...) and how they reflect the influences exerted on agents’ professionalization, visibility and attitudes.
