About the Journal
As a publication prior to Euskera Ikerketa Aldizkaria, the review Euskera was the official publication of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language-Euskaltzaindia, published from 1920 to 2022. From 2023 onwards there are two publications: Euskera Ikerketa Aldizkaria and Euskaltzaindiaren buletina. The former publishes original research papers, book reviews and other content in the research area of Euskaltzaindia, and is published on paper and in electronic format. The second documents the academic life and work of Euskaltzaindia, and is published electronically.
Euskera Ikerketa Aldizkaria comes out twice a year: the spring issue (January-June) published between March and April and the second (July-December) between September and October. To publish research papers the Editorial Committee requests the opinion of external assessors, using the double-blind PEER REVIEW system.
Current Issue
This issue covers a wide range of topics, several of which focus on the Northern Basque Country: the potential contributions of demolinguistics to language policy; the contrasts and nuances of poetry from 1940 to the present; the erosion of the familiar feminine allocutive form of address noketa in Lower Navarre (Ortzaize); and the informal spoken Basque of Labourd’s youth and surrounding areas. In addition, the volume includes a study on the rhythm of Basque dialects, together with two papers addressing issues related to primary school: one exploring the interplay between organised leisure activities and informal Basque usage, and another examining informal peer-group speech as an object of study within the school context. Ethnolinguistics also finds its place in this issue, with an article focusing on the nomenclature of the months.
Furthermore, the «Notes» section features a review of the career of the Biscayan ethnographer Ander Manterola and an ironic reflection on the condition of subordinated languages, from the perspective of the Catalan language. The book review section, for its part, includes discussions on the current situation of the Aragonese language and on the potential benefits of applying thermodynamics to literary studies.
