In this article a reflection is made on the Basque bilingual teaching models and proposes a basis for an intergrated teaching of languages. This contemplation focuses on four central points: the first two deal with the role played by quantitative criteria when implementing the bilingual models as well as when evaluating them in successive times. special mention is made of the strengths and weaknesses of these criteria. The third point examines the psycholinguistic principles of immersion education. The resources and reflection that are based on didactics in the field of languages is the fourth point of the article. The paper concludes with a proposed basis for the integrated teaching of languages that is part of empirical research on the development of the Basque language and of Spanish in 5 and 8 year old bilingual students.
