The origin of this issue is the international conference organised by the consolidated research group Historical Memory in Iberian Literatures (MHLI) of the University of the Basque Country, on 21 and 22 June 2018 at the Miramar Palace in Donostia, under the title: "Literature and Censorship. Memories under discussion". The aim was to promote theoretical and historical reflection on censorship, on the one hand, and to analyse its impact on literature in the Iberian area, on the other. However, from the outset, the conference had a third important objective: to recognise and pay tribute to the invaluable research work of the Basque sociologist and academic Joan Mari Torrealdai on censorship in Basque studies.
