Abstract

Traditional nationalism used modern Basque theater as a tool, a political strategy for the Basque language to reach its people’s ears. Therefore, through 20th century, fondness for amateur theatre was brought by the need to define a Basque identity. Nevertheless, the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and World War II (1939-1945) silenced the Basque theater production almost entirely. After that period, whereas the situation improved a little in the Northern Basque Country, Franco’s dictatorship and its strict censoring labor outrageously cut the wings of all creative processes for 40 years.
