The political landscape of the northern Basque country shows an orientation to the right during the 30s; the political leader was Jean Ybarnégaray, Member of Parliament, who asserted his ideas regarding the extreme right. When the civil War broke out in Spain, the Northern Basque Country aligned itself on the side of Franco, not only the politicians, but also Eskualduna, the Basque weekly newspaper whose leaders blindly followed Jean Ybarnégaray. The magazine Gure Herria as well as Eskualzaleen Biltzarra did not adopt this attitude. Quite the contrary, the persons in charge were concerned about their members remaining in the southern Basque country and the refugees who began to arrive. The Basque fraternity made its presence known through high-ranking dignitaries of the Church during the time that associations in favor of refugees became to come into exis- tence. a number of young persons also made their presence known, and who is also re- flected as among them, is the young priest Iratzeder whose poems evoke a tempest of leaden skies and the terrible consequences of the war for the Basque country. the division between the Basques of the south also exists in the north.
