Abstract

In Araba (Álava) down the centuries Basque has survived in names; in the names of places and flora, in particular. These Basque names confirm that Araba has been Basque. The city of Gasteiz is an example of this: in the 12th century King Sancho VI gave Gasteiz the name Victoria, which the local people pronounced Bitoria, because they were Basque speakers. The whole of Araba is also the owner of a beautiful collection of Basque names which bear witness to the evolution of Basque words.
