Abstract

A personal vision of the topic of Pello Esnal’s book «Hitzordena. Erabilera estrategikoa» is recorded in this article. The author considers the fact that Basque texts cause comprehension problems for Basque speakers to be a form of alienation and emphasizes the importance of the very basic notion of the comprehensibility of texts. Whether a text’s comprehensibility is a matter to be left wholly in the hands of its creator’s strategies or whether grammar also has something to say on the topic is discussed. Following on from that the author proposes taking the presence of a subordinate clause as a criterion for establishing sentence word order. In addition, the phenomenon of semantic postponement is briefly examined and a number of valid ways to correct such cases proposed.
