Abstract

The presence of Basque can be observed in the history of minor place-names in the district once known as Soportilla, which had Berantevilla as its main place. From that information the conclusion can be drawn that Basque was spoken in that area during the modern age (though exactly when cannot be determined) and, hence, locals must have given Basque names to Berantevilla and other centers of population. Documentary evidence of the names of those centers and, in particular, that of the major place-name Berantevilla has been collected. In addition, the possible etymological origin and evolution of its variants is also discussed. The ultimate object of this process is to establish the Basque version of the name Berantevilla.
