The part played by poetry anthologies in the history and canon of Basque literature is examined, in particular the educational function of anthologies and their role in mediating in the transmission of literary values to readers. Reflection on the major 20th century poetry anthologies brings out the importance of criteria based on models of language in judgments on the value of literary texts, to the point where they constitute the prime vector in forming the canon of modern poetry. In addition, the force of attraction caused by the sociolinguistic situation in the matter of evaluative criteria within the system of Basque literature is also a focus of reflection, both with regard to the diglossic situation at present experienced and to the consequences of a belated standardization.
