Abstract

The “mugagabea” or indefinite case, “mugatu singularra”, definite singular and “mugatu plurala”, definite plural, of Basque grammars are treated as purely morphological paradigms and kept clearly distinct from the semantic concepts of [+zehaztua], [+definite], and [+plurala], [+plural]. We will also refine our understanding of [+Hurbila], [+Proximal], in the same light. We shall be rigorous in assigning determiners, number and case, all of which may be considered functional categories, to specific groups of phonic segments. Marginal forms of speech offer us complementary but enlightening details through diacronic and diasystemic data.
