Abstract

This articles serves as a presentation of the main features of the EHHE (Basque Historical Etymological Dictionary). After listing the sections that make up the dictionary, I dwell on some details of its composition, namely the criteria for choosing the words to be included in the dictionary, and how they have been organized into lexical families. I also describe the structure of the entries, by defining the sections that form each of them. Thereafter I offer some examples that show the kind of advancements that the EHHE has made. Finally, I inventory the aspects that need to be improved in the EHHE, and I also reflect on the etymological practice with special attention to language isolates.
