Abstract

Claudio Otaegi (1836-1890), a writer and a translator, was also a journalist. As a teacher in Hondarribia, he published six chronicles of the events of his municipality in the magazine Euskal-Erria, between 1880 and 1887. They were the first chronicles published in
Basque in a media outlet. This work is based on a nineteenth-century Basque media hemerographic study, which shows that Otaegi’s chronicles were pioneering. It is in this context that Otaegi’s chronicles have been analysed from the point of view of journalistic genres.
