We will analyze the different issues involved in the fixation and in the teaching of a phonetic norm. The linguists' role in apparently prescriptive work will be then questioned. Among the arguments in favor of this approach, we should consider: (i) the detailed knowledge of the linguist about the historical, geographical and social changes of the language, (ii the possibility to work on non-standard norms, and (iii) the legitimacy of the use of nonstandard norms in multiple communication contexts. In addition to the educational context, other types of intervention will give us information about explicit training activities (e.g., in performative arts). The examples will focus on relative to Portuguese, Mirandese and French.
