Mariano Mendigatxa, from Vidangoz, is an essential personality in the research of the Roncal Valley’s Basque. He lived the decline of the dialect from beginning to end, he was collaborator for Bonaparte and Azkue, translated several texts, completed the Roncal Valley’s Basque’s verb conjugation, and left a wide vocabulary and a large ethnographic material (songs, proverbs, tales, customs...). When we have just commemorated the centenary of his death, it is an ideal time to know more about his biography.
