Following the publication of the Euskal Hiztegi Historiko Etimologikoa, this article presents the etymological dictionaries published in the field of Indo-European languages. After analyzing the dictionaries promoted by the neo-grammarians, are analyzed the characteristics of the historical-etymological dictionary of Latin by Ernout-Meillet, which had a great impact on his discipline. Among others, the following points have been dealt with: the need for the Thesaurus produced by philologists, a task that in the case of Basque has been carried out by the General Basque Dictionary, the influence of Benveniste’s root theory on the study of Indo-European languages, the new perspective generated by research in recent decades and the consequences it has had on the lexicography of Indo-European languages, especially on the Leiden school project. Finally, the semantic aspect of the etymology has been commented.
