Abstract

Standard Basque was developed for a long time without regulating pronunciation, but in 1998 the Royal Academy of the Basque Language (Euskaltzaindia) published its rules for Careful Pronunciation of Standard Basque. The Pronunciation Committee proposes linking careful standard Basque with the dialects through pronunciation, so that Basque can develop all the necessary registers for complete and normal use. In the context of that effort special attention needs to be paid to preserving the connections between formal standard Basque and the various registers used colloquially (or, where they are lacking, to developing them).
