Abstract

As houses are privately owned, owners decide how to name them, but when making that choice it is advisable to be aware of the sociolinguistic characteristics of the local speaking community, both current and past. From the middle of the nineteenth century onwards, towns have created structures outside the usual system for naming new Basque houses. We have compiled the most notable cases along those lines, as well as general criteria for giving new house names; whoever wants to give a house a name in Basque should always have access to useful guidelines and recommendations in order to guarantee the linguistic correctness of the chosen name.
