Abstract

Chaho observes an excess of purism and poor construction of words among Southern [Peninsular] lexicographers, in Larramendi especially, but is also aware that the new disciplines call for such words. However, he does not do much better when providing two sources for writing about the origin of Basque: the socalled kantabro or euskarien hispanique, and the other, the euskarien hindustani. Latin is undoubtedly a serious source, but writing that Basque looks like Sanskrit is going a little bit too far.
