Sobre el topónimo Guillarte (Guillarte)

Abstract

The hamlet of Gillarte/Guillarte is situated on the slopes of the sierra of Gibillo/Guibijo within the council area of Kuartango (Araba). The fact that the first written occurrence is in the form Guibigioarrate leads us to postulate the undocumented form Gibillo harrate. In any case, Gillarte has evolved from that archaic form and was completely standardised when that area was monolingual Basque-speaking. For this reason Gillarte should be treated as Basque.
