About the Journal
As a publication prior to Euskera Ikerketa Aldizkaria, the review Euskera was the official publication of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language-Euskaltzaindia, published from 1920 to 2022. From 2023 onwards there are two publications: Euskera Ikerketa Aldizkaria and Euskaltzaindiaren buletina. The former publishes original research papers, book reviews and other content in the research area of Euskaltzaindia, and is published on paper and in electronic format. The second documents the academic life and work of Euskaltzaindia, and is published electronically.
Euskera Ikerketa Aldizkaria comes out twice a year: the spring issue (January-June) published between March and April and the second (July-December) between September and October. To publish research papers the Editorial Committee requests the opinion of external assessors, using the double-blind PEER REVIEW system.
Current Issue
This year’s second issue offers you the opportunity to explore a range of topics in greater depth. Several research articles analyse the use of Basque from various perspectives. The first presents the results of a socio-educational intervention carried out with children and young people in residential care in Gipuzkoa, with a view to examining the relationship between informal speech, multilingualism and organised leisure activities; the second analyses the influence of Basque speakers’ beliefs and opinions regarding certain pronunciations and their impact on variation according to speech register; whilst another article examines the characteristics of Basque speakers who do not use, or rarely use, code-switching. A second section includes two articles relating to the field of education: one analyses the relationship between the use of Basque and innovative teaching methods, based on observation, interviews and documentary analysis; whilst the other employs automated analysis to examine the linguistic development of written expression amongst primary school pupils and its influence on academic grades, taking into account the distinctive features of the Basque language.
This issue also addresses the field of literature, analysing the role played by women writers in Basque poetry over the last half-century, based on what the numbers reveal. It also includes an article on the early days of news journalism in Basque at the end of the 19th century. Finally, the issue discusses the perceptions of the Basque language held by the local and immigrant populations of Bortziriak (Navarre) from the perspective of linguistic branding. This issue also contains two notes, both of which provide information on the Euskorpora Summit 2026 conference held on 11 June 2026 in Bilbao. Firstly, there is a brief report on the conference, followed by a detailed account of the academic contributions made during the event.
Finally, a review of the book Els fundadors has been included, as the author considers that the book—which aims to develop an independent and humanist intellectual tradition in Catalan—may prove very useful for reflecting on Basque culture and European civilisation.
