This paper aims at proposing a genealogy of the double consciousness as detected in ancient regime peninsular (and Atlantic) Basque literature. For that purpose two aspects of Basque poetry from 16th to 18th century have been addressed: section one focuses on poem names mentioning language while their relation to the symbolic violence originating from the Hispanic imperial discourse formation is tracked down; section two analyzes how the iron (age) topic is mentioned by those poems as a sign of the fact that also the Basque literary subject has internalized this stereotypical image of Basque people constructed by the Hispanic imperial discourse formation.
