Abstract

How does Ramon Saizarbitoria use the historical clichés of the Civil War in his novel Amor y guerra (love and War) (Bihotz bi. Gerrako kronikak, 1996)? How does this use tell us about the recent poetry by the author? this article attempts to answer these two questions and, as it proceeds in its investigation, to highlight the centrality of history –precisely that of Basque history– in the literary universe of Saizarbitoria. the Civil War in this work serves as support function to a realist aesthetics, as an instrument of catharsis for the author’s conscience, or even as an allegory of the infighting in the Basque literary field.
