Abstract

The latest enrollment data from the Department of Education of the Basque government confirms the continued increasing demand for bilingual educational models and in particular for the immersion model in Basque. This article examines the reasons why parents, especially non-speakers of Basque, choose those models. Integrative and instrumental motivations are discussed, as well as the influence of the parents’ beliefs and prejudices concerning the Basque language itself, language acquisition and language learning, and the phenomena of bilingualism and multilingualism. The data presented here are part of a wider research on the linguistic prejudices and attitudes non-Basque speakers show towards the language.
